×INGREDIENTS
-
1 tablespoon Extra Virgin Olive Oil
-
0 1/4 cup, chopped Onions
-
2 tbsp Tomato Paste
-
1 tsp Chili Powder
-
1 tsp Cumin
-
0 3/4 tsp Garlic Powder
-
0 3/4 tsp Ground Mustard
-
0 1/4 tsp Allspice Ground
-
0 1/8 tsp Red or Cayenne Pepper
-
1 1/2 cup Unsweetened Ketchup
-
1 tbsp Vinegar (Cider)
-
0 2/3 tbsp Worcestershire Sauce
-
2 teaspoon Sucralose Based Sweetener (Sugar Substitute)
-
0 1/4 tsp dry Coffee (Instant Powder)
DIRECTIONS
Most commercial barbecue sauces are full of sugar or high-fructose corn syrup. Feel free to customize the sauce to your preferences or to the recipe you'll use this sauce with. For example, you can use more or less cayenne pepper or more or less vinegar as well as other spice combinations. Each serving is 2 scant Tbsp. It is also advised to use only 1-1 1/2 tbsp if you are on Atkins 20 Phase 1 as the recipe is a little high in NC for that phase.- Heat oil in a medium saucepan over medium-high heat. Add onion and sauté until soft, about 3 minutes.
- Add tomato paste, chili powder, cumin, garlic powder, mustard, allspice and cayenne pepper, cook until fragrant, about 1 minute.
- Stir in ketchup, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, sugar substitute and coffee; simmer, stirring occasionally, until very thick, about 8 minutes.
- Serve warm or at room temperature, or refrigerate in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
Cooking Tip
Barbecue sauce comes in all levels of sweet and spicy. Play with the spices to give it your own personal zing!
