How to be healthy and active this 4th of july

Independence Day is often celebrated with fireworks, pool parties, and cookouts laden with high-carb foods. But you can stick to your low carb diet—and squeeze in some exercise—this 4th of July by following Atkins’ tips for a healthy and active holiday.

Eat

Eat

Bring a nutritious low carb dish to the annual 4th of July cookout. Try these veggie kebabs, packed with zucchini, red pepper, and mushrooms, or opt for grilled asparagus with lemon. If you’re craving sweets, bake double chocolate cookies or a truly coconut cake.

Swim

Swim

Swimming is a calorie-torching aerobic exercise that’s also easy on the joints. Head to the local watering hole—whether it’s a public pool, a lake, or a friend’s backyard pool—and aim to do a few laps of your favorite stroke. You can also paddle out to the deep end and tread water. A 180 lb. person treading water slowly for 30 minutes can burn more than 160 calories.

Bike

Bike

Instead of driving to your town’s Independence Day fireworks show, bike the route instead. Pack a picnic blanket and a low carb snack such as black olives with cheddar or smoked sausage deviled eggs.

Paddle

Paddle

Plan an early morning paddle in a kayak, canoe, or stand-up paddleboard. Paddling primarily works the muscles in your shoulders, chest, arms, and back; you’ll also work your core on the stand-up paddleboard.

Run

Run

Have little ones? Organize a rowdy game of tag or capture the flag and play alongside the kids. Later, serve up creamy chocolate sodas or root beer floats as a treat.

Play

Play

Invite the neighborhood crew over for a friendly backyard volleyball or badminton tournament. Or head to a local park to play tennis or basketball on a public court.

Stretch

Stretch

Spread out a blanket in the park and practice yoga for 30 minutes. Yoga has been shown to reduce stress and anxiety, improve flexibility, and lower blood pressure.

Walk

Walk

Take your favorite four-legged companion for a long stroll around town. Fireworks may frighten Fido so be sure to take your walk in the daytime.
